Visit to Whitworth Gallery 28th September 2006
We had a very pleasant visit to the Textile Exhibition and looked at at various types of manufacture including Printing - Weaving - Embroidery - Tapastry and some others I can't remember.
At each of the two sections selected for us to view, we were given the opportunity to handle samples of the various procedures described to us by the very enthusiastic curator.
One of the most amazing exhibits was a pair of chinese shoes typical of those worn by the ladies who had their feet bound. Another pair showed the change to a more relaxed foot wear for feet that were not bound.
There were examples of sarongs from Indonesia and head wear from Nigeria. One of our group, Remi, was able to explain to us in more detail the type of items still worn in his country.
The Gallery had gone to lengths to ensure that our visit was as visually impaired friendly as possible and enabled us to have a most relaxed and rewarding visit.
Many thnks to Mary for all her hard work in arranging the visit and the curator and staff for making us so welcome, finishing with a delightful home baked biscuit and cuppa.
